Natural Burial Grounds in the UK – A Guide by Leedam

How many natural burial grounds are in the UK?
There are now over 300 natural burial grounds across the UK, and that number is growing every year.
More people are discovering that a natural burial is not only a gentler choice for the planet, but also a more personal and flexible alternative to a traditional cemetery or crematorium.
From peaceful burial meadows to tranquil woodland burial sites, these spaces offer an environment where you can say goodbye in your own way, without the time pressures or rigid restrictions often found elsewhere.
At Leedam Natural Burial, we currently manage 10 natural burial grounds in partnership with local landowners and custodians. Since opening our first site in 2002, we’ve become known internationally for our sustainable meadow burials. But more importantly, we’ve stayed a family-run business that cares deeply for the people who choose us, and for the land we look after.

What is a natural burial ground?
A natural burial ground is a resting place designed to work in harmony with nature. Instead of polished granite headstones and manicured lawns, you’ll find meadows, wildflowers, woodland, and open countryside.
Natural burial grounds are not the same as a “green corner” in a traditional cemetery. They are purposefully managed with eco-friendly funeral practices, encouraging native wildlife, and protecting natural habitats for the future.

How does a natural burial ground work?
The focus is on sustainability and simplicity.
That means:
Biodegradable coffins and urns made from natural materials
No embalming or harmful chemicals such as formaldehyde
Burial areas that blend with the local environment, from hay meadows to new woodland plantings
No tarmac roads, mass headstones, or structures that damage the habitat
We also offer time and space, something crematoria often can’t. There’s no rush, no back-to-back bookings, just the freedom to plan a funeral or celebration of life that feels right for you. This might mean bringing the family dog, travelling by tractor, or raising a toast at the graveside.
How is a natural burial ground managed?
Every site is different, so it’s always best to visit in person. At Leedam, we promise to manage our burial grounds in a way that protects both the land and those who rest there.
Our ethos is simple: keep it natural, personal, and beautiful. That means minimal disturbance to wildlife, planting for the future, and supporting families to create meaningful, eco-conscious farewells.

There are commitments and promises we make to our families and to those who are resting with us. This is so they know we care for the natural burial ground and their loved ones in the best way possible. There are rules and regulations that people agree to when choosing to use us. This means they can decide if it’s the right place for them. It also means those who choose to use us have peace of mind knowing exactly how we manage our burial grounds and what they can expect.
