We couldn’t think of anyone more deserving of the Gravedigger of the Year award than Jonny Yaxley.

Jonny is our gravedigger at Henley Woodland Burial Ground, and to all of us, and the families who meet him, he’s so much more than that. He’s a caring and compassionate soul who brings warmth, respect, and gentleness to every part of his work.

Jonny is dedicated to helping families, not just on the day of the funeral, but in the weeks and months that follow. He’s that friendly, familiar face at the burial ground when people come back to visit, always ready with a kind word, a smile, and time to listen.

Many people imagine Jonny’s job to be dark or depressing. But he sees it differently. For him, this is life-affirming work, filled with care, meaning, and human connection.

We’re so proud to see Jonny recognised at the Good Funeral Awards for the heart and dedication he brings to Henley Woodland Burial Ground every single day.
