Using your phone's GPS to find a grave

Modern smartphones have built-in GPS technology which enables them to display your precise location on a map on screen. We can use that ability to show your position relative to a mapped location such as a grave.

Step 1 - install the apps

For Android users two apps are a must, download and install:
  • Google Maps and
  • ZXing's Barcode Reader
For iPhones and iPads install a free QR Code reader and use Apple Maps.
These apps will enable you to scan the QR Code we'll send you and see the pinpoint position of the grave on the map on your phone's screen.

Step 2 - scan the QR Code

On the grave location plan that we sent you is code consisting of an array of black and white squares. This is the QR Code, which contains the geo-location of the grave. Use the barcode scanner app on your phone to read the QR Code. It should beep and ask you if you want to 'See the location on a map', or to 'Get directions'. Click on 'Get Directions'.

Step 3 - follow the directions

The position of the grave will be shown by a red pin. Your own position is shown by a blue dot with a small arrow to indicate the direction of travel. You will see the blue dot moving across the map as you walk. You will have reached the grave when the blue dot coincides with the red dot under the red pin. Bear in mind that accuracy is no closer than 4m
