We have two roles available at the Hundy Mundy Woodland Burial Ground near Kelso: Custodian and Grave Digger. If you’re interested in joining our team, read the relevant job description below.
Custodian Role
We are looking for a passionate individual to become the Custodian of the iconic Hundy Mundy woodland burial ground between Kelso and Gordon – part of the esteemed Mellerstain Estate. In this role, you’ll be the dedicated caretaker of the burial ground and our local representative for the families who choose it.
As a Custodian, you’ll play a pivotal role in connecting with families interested in our natural burial ground, meticulously marking out plots for gravediggers before funerals, providing a compassionate presence at memorial services, affixing plaques in the memorial panel, and ensuring the site’s well-being.
What You’ll Do:
- Connect with families interested in our natural burial ground
- Mark and define burial plots from the measurements we provide
- Provide a compassionate presence at funerals
- Place plaques in the memorial panel
- Ensure the site’s well-being and beauty
What We Offer:
- A flexible, part-time role (10-15 hours per month)

Requirements:
- UK Driving License and access to a car/van
- Good physical mobility
- Proficiency in digital communication
- Familiarity with basic gardening tools
- Ability to work independently

Grave Digger Role
We’re looking for a skilled contractor to become the Grave digger of the iconic Hundy Mundy woodland burial ground between Kelso and Gordon – part of the esteemed Mellerstain Estate. In this role, you’ll be the dedicated grave digger of the burial ground and be responsible for all whole-body burials and ashes interments.
As the Grave digger, you’ll work closely with the Custodian, who will mark out the plots for you and 0versee the funerals. It is important to be respectful and considerate of families when digging and backfilling, and graves must be neatly presented before, during and post-funeral.

- Personal liability insurance
