That it can be much more personal and less restrictive. We are discovering it’s becoming a really popular choice. With increasing popularity, it’s not surprising to hear that natural burial ground numbers are rising across the UK. This includes burial meadows and woodland burial grounds, sometimes called green burial sites. What’s important is that you find a natural burial ground you feel is right for you.
At Leedam we have 10 natural burial grounds we have set up and manage in partnership with our landowners and custodians. Leedam is a family business in every sense. We all take a personal interest and care in what we do, and look after the families who place their trust in us. We started managing natural burial grounds in 2002 and are now world leaders in sustainable meadow burials.

What is a natural burial ground?
A natural burial ground is a place that works with people and nature to offer beautiful, natural resting places in a truly natural setting. These range from meadows to memorial gardens. From existing woodland to land dedicated to becoming new woodland. From nature reserves within towns to wild, open country. Not to be confused with a ‘natural burial area’ offered in the corner of an existing traditional cemetery or graveyard.
Our natural burial grounds are a beautiful and sustainable alternative to traditional cemeteries and crematoriums. Set within some of the UK’s most scenic locations. They are peaceful, natural places that allow you to honour a loved one’s life in your own special way.

How does a natural burial ground work?
Natural burial grounds work by using eco-friendly practices. This encompasses the management of the burial ground and any funeral arrangements made.
They ensure materials are environmentally friendly and biodegradable. They encourage the use of sustainable materials and support people with advice when planning a green burial. Harmful chemicals like formaldehyde (used in traditional funeral practices like embalming and MDF/chipboard coffins) are not permitted. Natural burial grounds work with native habitats including grassland, meadow and woodland. Their creation focuses on how they can protect these spaces and work with them. rather than removing vital habitats to make way for tarmac roads, headstones or stone-filled graves which destroy native habitats. By protecting native habitats natural burial grounds help to protect all the wildlife using them.
They offer a more relaxed setting for funerals without time restrictions or back-to-back funerals, often seen in crematoria. Families have time and space to plan a personal send-off or celebration of life. This can include touches like bringing the dog, a final journey on the tractor or raising a toast.
Sustainable management is also an important part of how a natural burial ground works.
How is a natural burial ground managed?
Natural burial grounds vary in style and approach, including the management of a burial ground. It’s important you are happy with this, what you can and cannot do at the natural burial ground and how the land is secured for the future. Every natural burial ground is different, so the best way to find this out is to ask the natural burial ground you are considering.
At Leedam our ethos is to keep things, simple, natural, and beautiful. Our aim is to encourage more personal funeral services that have as little harmful effect on the environment as possible.

There are commitments and promises we make to our families and to those who are resting with us. This is so they know we care for the natural burial ground and their loved ones in the best way possible. There are rules and regulations that people agree to when choosing to use us. This means they can decide if it’s the right place for them. It also means those who choose to use us have peace of mind knowing exactly how we manage our burial grounds and what they can expect.

Ultimately, each natural burial ground is different with its own feel. This is why we always suggest that people visit our natural burial grounds first to make sure it’s where they want to be. You can walk around, meet the custodian and ask any questions you want to know.
