Sunshine! – For the first time in what seems like weeks we had a beautiful sunny day on Sunday. We had to get out and enjoy it, so we set off for high ground and dry(ish) tracks – Beacon Hill above Trellech Monmouthshire (Grid Reference SO 51221 05446). The Forestry Commission has signposted alternative red and yellow trails to guide you around the hilltop woodland. On the flatter eastern slope of the summit, an area of woodland has been felled and cleared leaving heather and gorse heathland. This is now grazed by a team of Welsh Mountain Ponies, which are helping to restore and maintain the heathland habitat. Super friendly and a delight for walkers, the ponies are making a really positive contribution to this landscape.
